Do i need a 4″ base if i’m just building a flagstone pathway? it depends. the base is there to keep the stones from shifting and becoming uneven over time. a little movement in a pathway usually isn’t a big deal so if you want you could just do two inches of base material. or just eliminate the base and do two inches of decomposed granite.
